In-Degree and PageRank: Why Do They Follow Similar Power Laws?
نویسندگان
چکیده
PageRank is a popularity measure designed by Google to rank Web pages. Experiments confirm that PageRank values obey a power law with the same exponent as In-Degree values. This paper presents a novel mathematical model that explains this phenomenon. The relation between PageRank and In-Degree is modeled through a stochastic equation, which is inspired by the original definition of PageRank, and is analogous to the well-known distributional identity for the busy period in theM/G/1 queue. Further, we employ the theory of regular variation and Tauberian theorems to analytically prove that the tail distributions of PageRank and In-Degree differ only by a multiplicative constant, for which we derive a closed-form expression. Our analytical results are in good agreement with experimental data.

متن کاملDetermining Factors Behind the PageRank Log-Log Plot
We study the relation between PageRank and other parameters of information networks such as in-degree, out-degree, and the fraction of dangling nodes. We model this relation through a stochastic equation inspired by the original definition of PageRank. Further, we use the theory of regular variation to prove that PageRank and in-degree follow power laws with the same exponent. The difference be...
متن کاملGeneralized PageRank on directed configuration networks
This paper studies the distribution of a family of rankings, which includes Google’s PageRank, on a directed configuration model. In particular, it is shown that the distribution of the rank of a randomly chosen node in the graph converges in distribution to a finite random variable R∗ that can be written as a linear combination of i.i.d. copies of the attracting endogenous solution to a stocha...
متن کاملSome protein interaction data do not exhibit power law statistics.
It has been claimed that protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks are scale-free, and that identifying high-degree "hub" proteins reveals important features of PPI networks. In this paper, we evaluate the claims that PPI node degree sequences follow a power law, a necessary condition for networks to be scale-free. We provide two PPI network examples which clearly do not have power laws when a...
متن کاملWhy Do They Want to Migrate from Rural Areas? A Psychological Perspective from Iran
While migration is a basic element of population dynamics in most societies, in Iran, rural-urban migration is a particular concern of both social scientists and policy makers. Rural-urban migration accounts for over half of the growth of most Iranian cities. On the other hand, this movement is often cited as having negative effects on rural area, including a shortage of supply of agricultural ...
